Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was bestowed with the esteemed Pardo Alla Carriera Award at the 77th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland on Saturday evening. The actor graced the occasion to accept the honor in recognition of his significant contributions to the world of cinema.

A Warm Welcome and Witty Remarks

Upon receiving the award, Shah Rukh charmed the audience with his signature wit and warmth. He began his acceptance speech by acknowledging the warm welcome, drawing a humorous comparison between Locarno’s hot weather and the climate in India. “Thank you all for welcoming me with such wide arms – wider than the ones I do on screen. It’s a very beautiful, very cultural, very artistic, and extremely hot city of Locarno. So many people stuffed up in a little square and so hot. It’s just like being home in India,” he said, eliciting laughter from the crowd.

During his speech, a fan shouted “I love you” from the audience, to which Shah Rukh playfully replied, “I love you also. All dramatics continues after the serious speech. It’s the Locarno Film Festival, we all need to sound intellectual, ok?”

Reflections on Art and Creativity

Shah Rukh shared his profound insights on the significance of art and creativity, stating, “Art is the act of affirming life above all. It goes beyond every man-made boundary into a space of liberation. It need not be political. It need not be polemical. It need not sermonize. It need not intellectualize. It need not moralize. Art and cinema only need to say what it feels from the heart, to express its own truth. And that, to me, is the biggest creativity, honestly.”

He emphasized the role of love in creativity, saying, “There is no creativity without love, which is a language which transcends all languages and is comprehended by everyone around the world. So creativity, love, and giving joy to me, is one and the same thing.”

Ending with Gratitude

Ending his speech on a note of gratitude, Shah Rukh expressed his heartfelt thanks in Hindi, saying, “I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart and from India. Namashkaar and dhanyawaad (Hello, thank you). God bless you all.

“The festival also paid tribute to Shah Rukh’s illustrious career by screening Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2002 film Devdas, in which the actor portrayed a wealthy law graduate whose life unravels following family rejection and personal turmoil.

A Celebration of Cinematic Excellence

The Pardo Alla Carriera Award is a testament to Shah Rukh Khan’s enduring legacy in the world of cinema. His ability to captivate audiences with his performances, charm, and on-screen presence has made him a global icon, transcending cultural boundaries.

As Shah Rukh Khan continues to inspire and entertain audiences worldwide, this prestigious honor serves as a reminder of the profound impact he has had on the art of filmmaking. His acceptance speech, filled with wit and wisdom, underscores his deep understanding of the power of art and creativity to bring people together and spread joy.
