The early reviews for George Miller’s highly anticipated Mad Max prequel, “Furiosa,” have been nothing short of glowing. Critics are hailing the film as a “powerhouse action filmmaking at its absolute best” and a “visceral triumph.” The film, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the younger Imperator Furiosa and Chris Hemsworth as the villainous warlord Dementus, has left viewers in awe with its stunning visuals, intense action sequences, and standout performances.
David Ehrlich, a film critic for IndieWire, posted on his X handle, saying, “I’m happy to report that ‘Furiosa’ is incredibly amazing. functions quite differently from “Fury Road” (in ways that I’m sure will irritate some people), but it also succeeds in making that film even more profitable while creating its own myth in the wasteland.
The performances were well received by Rotten Tomatoes critic Erik Davis, who commented, “George Miller’s #Furiosa is powerhouse action cinema at its absolute best! An intense and fast-moving epic that deepens the narrative of Furiosa and the Wasteland while showcasing the most outrageous chase scenes, extravagant characters, and breathtaking photography. Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy both fully immerse themselves in the Wasteland and do some amazing work. One particular War Rig scene completely amazed me and became a classic right away. I adored this movie as well as the #MadMax series. Get your engines going!”
Comparison with Mad Max: Fury Road
Referring to the parallels with the 2015 movie, Therese Lacson of Collider remarked, “I would and could easily watch 15 hours of Anya Taylor Joy and Alyla Browne as #Furiosa, however much of her film struggles with inconsistent pacing due to the segmented story.” While it won’t be as spectacular as Fury Road, it also doesn’t have to be.
Simon Thompson, a critic, exclaimed, “Jesus George Miller! #Furiosa swallows you up. It is so large that at points it almost seems to fill the #IMAX format, while at other times it has a very moving intimacy. The film’s rich, intelligent vision, which echoes elements of 1950s through 1980s cinema, is one the actors enjoy.
Praise for Chris Hemsworth
The AU Review’s Peter Grey also gave the movie high marks, highlighting Chris Hemsworth in particular: “Now that I can say this, #Furiosa is a BLAST! Though it was created with the spirit of Fury Road, it is still a unique beast that enjoys dramatic action and compelling characters. Though Anya Taylor-Joy truly owns the role, Chris Hemsworth uses this as an opportunity to establish his talent as a character actor.
Fans are eager for the prequel after it received such positive early reviews. In addition to receiving high praise upon its premiere in 2015, Mad Max: Fury Road went on to win six Oscars, including Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Film Editing.
This month, Furiosa will make its international premiere at the Cannes Film Festival 2024. On May 23, it opens in Indian theaters.
