The much awaited Indian epic science fiction dystopian film Kalki 2898 AD is scheduled for release in 2024. The film, which is based on Hindu texts and is directed by Nag Ashwin and produced by C. Aswani Dutt under Vyjayanthi Movies, is set in a post-apocalyptic world in 2898 AD. The film is accessible to a broad audience because it was shot concurrently in Telugu and Hindi.
In addition to Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, Disha Patani, and other notable actors, Prabhas plays the film’s lead role. With a ₹600 crore (US$75 million) budget, the movie is the most costly Indian film ever produced to date.
The premise of the film is set against the backdrop of a distant dystopian future society in the mystical city of Kasi (modern-day Varanasi), as well as ancient Indian mythology. It sets off on a millennium-long voyage that takes it from the far-off year of 2898 AD to the legendary events of the Mahabharata in the year 3102 BCE. The central character of the story is the mysterious Kalki, who is the tenth and last incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu.
Prabhas, who plays Kalki’s alter ego Bhairava, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, Mrunal Thakur, Rajendra Prasad, Pasupathy, Saswata Chatterjee, Anna Ben, and Mrunal Thakur (cameo) are among the cast members of the movie.
In a futuristic set located in Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City, the film’s production got underway in July 2021 and continued intermittently over the course of three years. On May 30, 2024, the movie is slated for a global theater release.
