The Mumbai Indians will attempt to put the controversial change of guard behind them when Hardik Pandya takes over as captain from five-time champion Rohit Sharma in the 2024 season. The MI will begin the new season against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, and there has been much discussion about the team environment following the massive overhaul.
However, former India bowler Harbhajan Singh believes the captaincy snub will have little affect on Rohit Sharma’s performance. However, the former off-spinner, who played for MI for many years during his IPL tenure, said that Hardik and the club management are under great pressure to keep the dressing room together.
“We hope MI plays as a team, since it will be difficult to stop them. The main task for Hardik and management is to unify the team,” Harbhajan stated on his official YouTube account.
“I know Rohit Sharma, and he’s a pretty simple man. He will never discuss this decision publicly. But one thing is certain: a five-time champion and someone who came close to winning the World Cup… it is stunning. Perhaps this decision could have been delayed by a year.
“Ability wise, Hardik Pandya is well capable. But the team will only win if it is unified. That’s the biggest challenge for MI.”
Homecoming for Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya, MI captain, may not have the most pleasant homecoming when he returns to Ahmedabad for the team’s first encounter against the Gujarat Titans. Hardik departed the MI for the Titans ahead of the 2022 season, and he led the team to its first championship in the same year.
Last season, the Hardik-led GT made the final but fell to MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings
